How to Measure a Sofa for a Custom Slipcover

Use this practical sofa measurement guide to prepare accurate dimensions for custom slipcovers, wholesale orders and private-label sofa cover samples.

How to Measure a Sofa for a Custom Slipcover
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a good-fitting custom slipcover. Whether you are a homeowner, retailer, furniture brand or importer, a clear measurement sheet helps a manufacturer recommend the right size, pattern and fabric.
Why Sofa Measurements Matter
Sofas can vary significantly in width, depth, arm shape, seat construction and cushion layout. A cover that fits one three-seat sofa may not fit another three-seat model. Accurate dimensions reduce sample revisions, improve quotation accuracy and help prevent fit problems in bulk production.
Before measuring, remove loose cushions, place the sofa in its normal position and use a flexible tape measure. Record every measurement in the same unit and identify whether each dimension is taken from the outside or inside of the sofa.
Step 1: Measure Overall Width
Measure from the outside edge of one arm to the outside edge of the opposite arm. Keep the tape straight across the front of the sofa. Record the widest point, especially if the arms or frame are rounded.
Overall width helps the supplier estimate the cover size and fabric consumption. For a collection with several sofa models, record the width of every model rather than using one average dimension.
Step 2: Measure Sofa Height
Measure from the floor to the highest point of the sofa back. Include the feet if the cover is intended to reach the floor. If the design stops above the feet, record the frame height separately.
Also measure the height from the floor to the seat surface. This helps the manufacturer understand the proportions of the sofa and position seams, skirts or elastic correctly.
Step 3: Measure Seat Width
Measure the usable seating area between the inside edges of the arms. For removable cushions, measure the combined width of the cushions and note the number of seats.
A supplier may need separate measurements for one-seat, two-seat and three-seat configurations. Include photos or a simple sketch when the cushions have unusual shapes.
Step 4: Measure Seat Depth
Measure from the front edge of the seat to the point where the seat meets the back cushion. If the back cushion is removable, measure the seat deck and the cushion separately.
Seat depth affects how much fabric must be tucked into the gap between the seat and back. It also influences the fit of stretch fabrics and the position of seams.
Step 5: Measure Arm and Back Dimensions
Record the arm width, arm height, back height and back thickness. For rounded, rolled or unusually wide arms, take measurements at the widest points and add a photo from the side.
For sectional sofas, measure each section separately. Note the direction of the chaise, the position of corners and whether the sections connect with hooks or clips.
Step 6: Record Cushion Details
Note the number of seat and back cushions, their shape, thickness and whether they are attached or removable. Measure cushion length, width and thickness where relevant.
Cushion details are important for separate cushion covers, fitted covers and designs that use elastic bands or ties. They also help the supplier create the correct cutting pattern.
What to Send a Custom Sofa Cover Supplier
A useful product brief should include:
  • Overall width, depth and height
  • Seat width, depth and height
  • Arm and back dimensions
  • Cushion quantity and measurements
  • Sofa photos from the front, side and back
  • Target fabric, color and stretch preference
  • Estimated order quantity and target market
  • Label, packaging and barcode requirements
For a wholesale or private-label program, send measurements for representative sofa models and identify which dimensions are fixed and which may vary in production.
Always Approve a Fitting Sample
Measurements on paper are only the first step. Ask for a fitting sample and test it on the intended sofa model. Check the alignment of seams, the amount of fabric tucked into gaps, the position of elastic, the coverage of the arms and the appearance after sitting and washing.
Record any corrections in writing. The approved sample should become the reference standard for bulk production and quality inspection.
